Smokefree Perth Criteriums

The Perth Criteriums concept was established in January 2008 from the need to meet the demand for high profile cycling events in Western Australia.

The popularity of cycling events on television in Australia such as the Tour de France, the Tour Down Under and the Jayco Herald Sun Tour has risen dramatically namely due to the results of Australians like Cadel Evans, Robbie McEwen and Stuart O’Grady. Because of this cycling in Australia is currently experiencing a boom both with competitive cyclists as well as recreational and social cyclists.

Perth has great support in being home to many junior world champions, a number of national champions and many masters and international champions. As a result, a large portion of Perth’s population embraces events such as the Smokefree Perth Criteriums.

The goal of Smokefree Perth Criteriums is now not only to gain the local support and involvement from WA cyclists, but to increase exposure and one day to build it to become a nationally and even internationally recognised event.

The Future

The demand for high profile cycling events around the country has been steadily growing over the past few years due to our athlete’s results internationally. The growth of the Tour Down Under into a major international event and the announcement of the 2010 World Cycling Championships in Melbourne are prime examples of this.

The goal of the Smokefree Perth Criteriums is to start with local talent and to build the series into a nationally recognised event over a number of years.
